Not really. They provide a starting point because you can adjust as needed just like you would do without them. For example you decide you are going to walk around the park on a cloudy day to shoot BIF. You set your camera with preliminary settings. Then as the photo op presents itself you may adjust shutter or aperture or if not using Auto ISO, adjust that too from your preliminary settings. The advantage for me is that after adjusting for the shot I can return to my preliminary settings with the simple twist of a knob and all the settings are returned to the starting point in one shot. I use U1 for a preliminary setting for BIF: Shutter priority set to 1/1600, initial aperture f10 and Auto ISO & +1.0 EV. U2 is set for the bird in a tree (stationary object type shot) Manual, Shutter 1/500, Aperture f8 and ISO 400. As stated, these are only starting points for what I usually encounter and are changed as warranted. The User settings just make it easy for me to pick up the camera as I run out the door for a daily walk. If I feel that the conditions will change for whatever reason, I can use A, S, M also. Ha!
