Analog Efex Pro?

I noticed something interesting today when using Photoshop, there seems to be a new Nik program called Analog Efex. It appears to turn your photos into old and faded images. But strangely I never downloaded this program, it just appeared on my Photoshop Nik pallet. Has any other Nik-ophiles noticed this new program?

For example, it can turn this photo

Into this one.

I know!! How cool is that?!? Ya gotta love the kids at google/nik, they know how to treat their customers. Now if we could only get them to teach Nikon this trick! :D

I sort of alluded to this in my post a while back about having issues with HDR Efex and it had to do with the software not being updated since I was still on the old Nik Collection and not the Google version. Google doesn't tell you about updates, it just does them when needed. I was using the software yesterday for most of the day and never noticed it, but unless it popped up above Viveza I never scrolled down. I need to check it out - while not getting too distracted.

Well mine hasn't showed up yet. Hopefully it will, if not, then I just won't use the new program... :(

I had not noticed it in mine till you mentioned it Jake! I selected edit and it opens and works... not sure if/how much I will use it but it is there.. :)

I just watched the video tutorials and I'm pretty impressed by not only what you can do, but how the controls seem to be evolving from the original Nik tools. I'm hoping things like the on-screen guides for vignette and other zone-specific effects find their way into Color Efex and Silver Efex. I also love that you can combine the pieces from the various camera types easily even when one type doesn't contain that filter effect by default.

I was prepared for a so-so batch of Instagram-like filters with a little extra, but these are very intelligently put together, and extremely powerful. Kudos to Google for not only making this available, but shooting it out for free to current owners (or at least some current owners - I need to boot up the Mac and see what's what!!).

Apparently the update is supposed to happen whenever you close the host application (LR, PS or Aperture) and reopen. That didn't happen with me and so I'm going to do a full reboot and try again. If that doesn't work, I found this on their Google+ site...

If you’ve had trouble getting the latest update of the Nik Collection by Google, we have some information that could help you out.

For most users, the Nik Collection by Google updates automatically in the background, when your host software (Photoshop, Lightroom, or Aperture) is closed. The next time you open one of these host application, an update of the Nik Collection (including Analog Efex Pro and retina support) will simply be there.

Some users have reported plug-ins disappearing from their host software after the auto update, or have gotten an error pointing to a missing MSVCP110.dll file. If this sounds familiar, don’t fret! We have a solution.

1) Manually download version 1.105 of the Nik Collection by Google to your computer. Either click the download link in your original Nik Collection purchase email, or download the free trial from google.com/nikcollection .
2) Make sure that all host applications are closed. There’s no need to uninstall your previous version of the Nik Collection.
3) Re-install version 1.105 of the Nik Collection.

If you’ve followed these steps and are still encountering errors updating the Nik Collection, please contact customer support by visiting google.com/nikcollection , and clicking on the contact us tab in the upper right. Thanks for your patience -- we’re excited for you to try out the latest version of the collection!

...and, provided that I don't get a message in 20 days saying that my trial is about to expire, the workaround works perfectly.

Thanks for the heads up, Dave. I never would have known what I was missing.

Wouldn't you know it - I was looking for half of this stuff for a photo I wanted to submit for the Halloween contest. I found a way to do it in layers but never had enough time to work it through. Where were you two days ago with this information, Dave?! LOL

If you want/need a tutorial/overview...

Interesting, but early in the discussion he talks about how the on-image guides are a "new addition to the Nik Professional Plug-ins", so I was hoping to be able to pop over to the other "Pro" tools and see them, but apparently they are an addition to the new one and not on the others. Hopefully soon!!
