An open letter to @BackdoorHippie - As a group, there are so many more photographers that want you to share your expertise with us than wanted you to retire from us. I think that those of you who want Backdoor Hippie back should vote "like" for this thread. I was following along with what you were discussing when you apparently decided to close down shop.
We can't make you come back, but this website will have lost an integral part of the group with your decision should you decide to stay away. I know I learned so much during my stay here that I could never have learned through anyone else on this or any other board. I wasn't always 'on board' with everything you said but I respected your opinions. I think that is what is going on here. I think you and whoever it was that you have problems with just need to respect each others opinion, but not necessarily agree with them. Heck, we live in America (most of us here possibly), and we have that article called "Freedom of Speech". Everyone should be allowed to speak as they feel as long as both parties don't initiate a verbal abusive aspect.
That being said, I know that you are a defender of Nikon's brand, and as most of us have Nikon's in one form or another, that is understood. That doesn't necessarily mean that one cannot speak about the negative aspects of Nikon's products or their lack of quality control, etc. What I find disturbing is that two people can't have a meaningful discussion on simple things, really, such as what transpired yesterday....i.e. crop sensor vs. full frame sensor. In retrospect, neither one of you had to admit you were wrong, or the other was right, etc. The bigger picture is that everyone reading threads is learning something. If someone isn't teaching it properly, well, then the onus is on the person reading it to discover for himself what the truth is. In most cases, it's not that big a deal. There are plenty of opinions on how to look at the issue. The internet is full of differing opinions. Why not just take it in stride, and return and do everyone a favor? We all have learned so much from you and your opinions, it's easy to see who's the better teacher of photography. I don't always agree with everything ANYBODY says, not even my wife (sorry honey). If you still decide to stay away, we will get over it I'm sure, but you, I and everyone else loses a very knowledgable member. It seems kind of juvenile to get upset over some trivial threads and then act like a child. It reminds me of my grandson, who gets mad at other kids and says,"I'm gonna take my toys out of the sandbox and go home". I'm really not calling you a child, because I know you're way more mature in your ways than a lot of us. But, for the love of God, I can't fathom why you would let someone disrupt your life on this forum to the point that you want to leave, when you obviously love the interactions we all find so pleasing on this site. There is room for EVERYONE as long as we don't cross the line of posting things that are outside of acceptable standards as deemed by the moderators. Please reconsider and come back. We will all miss you if you choose to stay away, but life will go on. The gap will be filled in, but not in the same way. Your style was one of a kind. That's why I chose to post this. Take some time if you need to and think it over. Life is too short as Scott Murray said today.
