Message: <blockquote data-quote="WayneF" data-source="post: 516161" data-attributes="member: 12496">A likely cause is that the camera accidentally got set to AutoFocus Off  (manual focus).  The switch on the body is under the lens release button, at maybe 4 o'clock around the lens.  The lens also has an AF Off switch on it.  Either could do it.  Exif will show Focus Mode: Manual in that case.   Focus mode:   AF-S default will not otherwise allow the shutter to activate if AF-S, but if focus was not found.  This used to happen to me now and then, until I got a D800.  The older bodies had a switch very easily touched and changed by accident.  The D800 added a button that had to be pushed before it could be changed, accidents very unlikely now.  I don't know about a D3, but it sounds older.</blockquote>
