I have had a few new lenses recently and am a bit of a AF fine tune freak as I know it makes a big big difference.
What I have found is that doing fine tune on a new lens out the box is a waste of time. You need to run the lens in by doing at least 100 nearfocus then far focus ..no need to take a picture just run the focus mechanism in and out in AF.
A 18-140 went from -15 to +4 and a sigma 150-500 from -15 to -4 .
Well worth a check after a few months of use.
The lack of AF fine tune is one of the reasons for poorer quality on say a 3200 so consider this when buying.
Older lenses like the Tokina 24-200 of about year 2000 needed 3 thou off the mount in the lathe to get it into range on the D7100 adjuster !!!!
