It is head and shoulders better than the 70-300 that you have, however it's not the one I would recommend. I now use my 70-200 2.8 instead of the 75-300 because even though I have to crop I get a better image. However that is a very expensive lens so not my recommendation.My wife has the 70-300 VR lens which is the modern equivalent of the 75-300. With enough light it takes images comparable to my 70-200 and it's only a 1/4 of the price. It's also a lot lighter than the 70-200.
