accidental exposure compensation on D610

One of my annoying bads is accidentally - unintentionally changing the exposure compensation on my D610.
I don't notice the change and then when I look at the images they are terribly under or over exposed.
the problem imho is that the button to change exposure is so close to the trigger

Is this just something I need to watch or is there a fix?

It shouldn't change the exposure unless you turn the rear wheel while holding down the button. I've never had a problem with mine. Keep watch in the viewfinder as it shows when it is in use.

I looked at David Busch's Guidebook, and I didn't see where you could change the button to something else. It is also used as a format button in conjunction with another button. It looks to me like (but I could be wrong) it is something you'll just have to be careful with. Maybe Jake knows something else that will work, but for now I don't see any other options. Sorry.

On mine it is impossible to accidentally compensate since it requires two actions. The fact that I back-button focus helps too. I don't need my finger on the trigger until the shot itself

Actually it isn't the +/- button that changes exposure but rolling the back adjustment roller changes exposure - without holding down the +/- button. It is one action, not two.

Now at least I know what I'm doing but do need to keep my eye on that exposure meter.

can i change it so that the back roller requires the +/- to be depressed.

when depressed and you roll the back roller you can see the numbers change - just rolling the back button changes it but you don't see the number change until you press the +/- button.

On mine the back roller changes shutter in manual or ISO in A. I can't compensate without pressing the button. I assume about every Nikon does that identical. Are you sure your +/- button isn't stuck?

I'll check mine if there are settings to change it. It probably works identical as yours at that level.

There's an option in the menu to either keep the buttons pressed or press/depress for the roller. If you change your current setting, the problem is fixed.

I don't have my D600 anymore, but do remember there is a menu setting to make the main dial (back wheel) act to change the exposure. Check your menu under shooting.

Under b3, easy exposure compensation, page 225 in the user manual.
