Hi Everyone. I Took a lot of shots this weekend but I'm pretty sure this was taken in manual mode. Shot with the kit lens, 55mm at 1/200s @ F/5.6 flower loris yard 1000px ut.jpg
I would welcome any criticism or any other thoughts on this shot.

Compositionally this is pretty good. You have the main flower in the center but that's ok because there is a definite line going from left to right of the stem and the leaf provides a nice "umbrella" for the flower. The only thing I might have done would be to include the bottom of the leftmost flower...the tip. It is cut off. Also perhaps the rightmost bud is cut off a little bit. Shooting tight is good but careful of what you chop off. Nice color, bokeh is fairly good. Interestingly-shaped flower as well.

I like the shot... I also think it's been just sliiiiightly over-cropped. Give us a little more room on the right and bottom edges for context.

Yea, you are both right. I did crop it to tight. I have a little room top and sides but the bottom was cut off. Here it is before I cropped it.

I like that less cropped version much better....maybe a bit of crop on the left and right side and you'll be golden (I like putting the plant on the left of the frame a bit like you did).

It is a bargain for sure. I kind of like doing macro photography so I think my next purchase will be a macro lens. Any suggestions that won't break the bank would be appreciated. I'm living on a fixed income these days so I can't go crazy on lenses.

This seems to be a list of all the lenses that will work with the d5100, including macros. Third party ones like Tamron and Sigma are included.List of Nikon F-mount lenses with integrated autofocus motors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have the Nikon 40mm 2.8 Micro. I`m glad I bought it. It produces great images, and sharper than the 18-55 VR, but to my eyes thus far, not by much. It`s also a great low light lens for the twilight shots I like to explore. However many say it`s not good for bugs, too short, and efforts to get close enough to fill the frame can easily scare away the subject. There`s also the issue of shading the subject when getting so close. That all makes sense. To me though, it`s a fast multi-pupose lens that`s good for occasional close ups. The 18-55 is also good for close ups though, as I`ve managed to get focus as close as like four inches from the end of the lens.

So here is a new cropping based on the critiques I received. Any new thoughts are welcome. Also do you think the frame adds anything to a photo or would you leave a photo to stand on it's own without adding any frame. I'm speaking generally for all photos being posted not just this particular one. Thanks.

Thank You for your thoughts on that. Here it is without the frame. I aggree it seems a bit to much and not really needed, thats why I wondered what others thought.

The pink frame had to go and the new, less aggressive crop is much better. See how the shot has some "breathing room" at the top right? The stem forms a leading line that draws the eye deeper into the frame, which is what you want, while that breathing room at the top creates a visual buffer so our eye's aren't lead out of the frame entirely. A good photo is a tiny world created in your viewfinder and the longer you can keep the viewer "trapped" inside that tiny world you've created the better.
