A noob Question.

I have a d5100 and I have both a 18-55 kit lens and a 55-300 lens. I many take photos on my snakes really close up what would be a good lens for that?

Thank you in advance.

Miknoypinoy...you'll find him here. Check out his gallery :)

And if you do lizards talk to Axeman.

If you are talking hot snakes I suggest you follow Glenn's advice!

thanks for the "free plug " Jeff. royal morphs, if you go to my profile check out the photobucket link. it will take you to my album.

most of those pics were taken with the Nikon 105mm macro lens. (which I still kick myself in the @ss for selling. gonna have to replace it one day lol).

for lighting I found bouncing the flash off the ceiling for the best representation of my boas true colors.

hope this helps. . .

That was funny! There isn't a lens long enough for me for a shot like that.

lol. . .
with the macro I mentioned I used to get real close lol. I handle my snakes regularly so they are fairly docile. havnt had one strike at the camera yet. may be there just "hams". lol.

Yeah, you SHOULD kick yourself for selling that 105! Great macro lens. 2 others that come to mind that you might want to look into are the 60 and the 85 macros. Awesome lenses. Might just fit the bill for ya, bud. :)

HEY, we have snake too lol
Here is "Hiss" playing with Nick
Shot with the 17-50

I use two lens both f/2.8 17-50 and a 70-200. I have shot Snakes and Lizards with both. Not that is matters, but I would have to choose the 70-200 just for the fact that I don't have to get so close and they are not interested in me and a lens being so close to them.

I'll shoot as close as I can and if I want to get closer I'll crop zoom in Photoshop

For lighting with fast glass I crack up the ISO, but like Mike said you can use a flash, and you going to need it if you using that 300mm lens, unless you go outdoors.

Thanks guys I breed Ball Python morphs (hence the name) and I generally get close up shots of them on marble or granite slabs or tiles.
Here are a few I took recently. I am still learning and figured for my shots i would need a Macro lens.
