A few (very) stupid questions - newbie D5100 user

I just bought a M5100 with the 18 - 300mm lens (my previous camera was a Sony A350)

I find it hard to find my problem on the index page probably because I do not exactly know how to look for it :) ...
  • Every time I download my photos the numbering goes back to DSC_001
    • Is there a way to fix that?
    • Is there a way to rename images as I load them on my computer - say from DSC_001 on my memory card to Fall001, Fall002 etc?
    • Any suggestions on a better way on numbering or better way to do things?
  • Default camera settings
    • Should I keep these as is until I get familiar with the camera or should some be changed right away?
  • Any suggestions on how to best learn about my camera?
    • Should I just start on page 1 of the user manual and go through it? Any suggestions on what I should pay special attention to?
    • Are there any online courses or ??? that could help me on the use of my camera?
    • I am a bit above "beginner" - any recommendations on a photo course? I went to a six week (two hours/wk) beginners course a few years back that really helped but now would like to learn a bit more.
  • I noticed that when I should on AUTO the flash comes up often even though it is daylight and quite bright - is this normal?
    • I have gone to the flash off position to stop this
  • Is there anyway to find out if there are other Nikonites in the area I live in (Fredericton, NB, Canada)?
  • Any words of other wisdom would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!!!

It should be in the manual. Look at the index under "files"-"naming or numbering". You probably don't have to read the manual from cover to cover, but it's nice to have it not too far for cases like this where you just then go through the index and find the answer you're looking for.

Enjoy your Nikon!

Hi Pedroj - thanks! Can you give me a few keywords to search for please?
I assume Nikon would be one and what would be some of the others?

Also, as another newbie D5100 shooter, if you shoot JPG - change the picture settings from 'Neutral' to 'Standard'. Your pictures will look so much more realistic and less dull :).

rename: Depends on how you download pictures to your computer. I use windows to import my pictures, it gives me options on changing file names.

ViewNX2 (which should be on the CD which came with your camera) I believe lets you rename on import.

The file naming/numbering you've figured out, but definitely worth reading some of the subject heading areas in the manual - sometimes you pick up things which you might not have thought to look into before, and thus learn more about your camera :)

Recently purchased Nikon D5100 Guide To Digital Photography by David Busch, seems to have some pretty good information in it, might help you out a little bit
