A couple of D7100 questions

The D7100 has 2 memory card slots, on the second card which setting is the best.

There is a offer on at the moment for a free MB-D15 battery grip for the D7100, which I sent off for at the beginning of January, got the email the other day, to say its in the post :)

Now do you keep the grip all the time, or just put it on when needed.

I personally have never needed a grip....battery life is good on the D7100. As far as which settings I use for Slot 1 and Slot 2, I have switched from using Slot 2 as a backup to using it as an overflow. I have never had a bad Memory card....knock on wood.

Same as Chris i use slot 1 and leave 2 for overflow though it never happens (in fact i dont have a card in it now),as for the grip see which feels best and decide if you need the extra battery time

I use Slot 1 for RAW and Slot 2 for backup because I shoot RAW only 95% of the time, and I like having backups.

On occasion I shoot RAW + JPG and for that RAW goes to Slot one and JPG to Slot 2.

As for the grip, I use one all the time. I have large hands and I like the stability the grip provides and just the overall ergonomics the body has with one attached. It does add a lot of bulk, though, and there days I removed the grip to save space/weight.

When I'm out in the field, mine is gripped.

I also shoot NEFs only. I prefer Slot 2 as Backup.

But these are my choices based on my experience. You should not try to copy anyone and make a choice based on your experience.

When I work a shoot that I absolutely can't lose the photos from, i.e., an event that can't/won't be done over, I'd use the second card slot as backup. (But the camera that I normally use in that situation, D700, only has one slot. Could this be another excuse for me to get either a D750 or D800E? )

If I am out shooting photos for stock, I don't really worry about it, but I'm likely set to use the second card as overflow.

I always shoot RAW + JPEG normal. I haven't always, but that's the way I do it now.

If I have a battery grip for the camera, it's on the camera unless space restrictions force me to remove it. My D7100 is the only camera that I don't have a grip for, though. Good for you on scoring a free one!!:D

Well, since you're getting the grip for free, try it out and see if you like it. It can be difficult to put into a camera bag, sometimes, depending on your equipment bag.

I don't have a grip on my D7100 and I'm fine with that. The standard-battery life is very good, as has been previously stated... I don't have any problems holding the camera (portrait or landscape).

Hopefully, they're giving you a 'Nikon' grip? There are some third-party grips out there; Vello comes to mind...

I use slot 1 for RAW and slot 2 for JPEG fine. I too have never had a single problem with my SD cards and so, I don't really feel the need to use slot 2 for backup (although slot 2 is kind of a backup the way I'm using it...). I use Sandisk SD cards exclusively.

Have fun with your D7100!
