9 Sins of a Newbie Photographer

When you start taking pictures without knowing a single thing about photography, it’s hard to accomplish a solid craft. Most of amateurs learn by trial and error. It is a good thing, cause you become skilled while experimenting; but there are things that every newbie photographer should avoid.

I must admit that When I bought my first DSLR, I didn't even know the basics of How aperture, Shutter speed and ISO including what the info on the kit lens means.

I had to choose between a Canon and the D80. I got it in the shop for test. I decided to get the D80 cos it had a better zoom. I didn't know that the lens was different. Imagine if the Canon was mounted with the longer zoom today I am shooting Canon

Oh its so embarrassing but I have NEVER done a format on any memory card ever :dejection: Because I never had a card failing on me and now I am kind of getting all superstitious about it...

I was guilty of buying a DSLR without knowing much of anything, more less how to use it! And I learned about the rule of thirds here! Lol Conceited is something I don't have a problem with since tons of photographers are better than I am! Lol I'm just having fun and I'm totally thrilled when a shot I take turns out good! Lol :D

Wow, this was one of the most poorly written (and might I add just plain shitty) articles I've ever read. Also, I would hardly call these sins.

#1 is a joke. You can read all there is about how to use a DSLR and it won't mean jack shit. Reading how to do something and being able to do it are 2 completely different things, and the only way to truly know how to do it is to get a DSLR and learn through trial/error and experience. You learn by doing, not reading. There goes the credibility of that point.

#2 makes slightly more sense but honestly, how often do memory cards get corrupted these days? I've used the same memory card for 2 years and I still have pics on it from the first day I used my Nikon. Nothing has happened. So this is merely a recommendation but hardly necessary unless you're running out of room on the card.

#3 only matters if you plan on taking shots at night. Plus, a flash won't really ruin the coloring of your night shots unless you use your pop-up flash which is probably a bigger sin than anything else that's been listed here.

#4 is one of the very few points worth taking seriously in this list.

#5 is hardly a sin. From what I've seen ISO doesn't play as big a role in landscapes as Aperture, Shutter Speed, etc. Yes it can be useful and sometimes necessary for a certain type of atmosphere, but again, hardly a sin.

#6 and #7 are pretty hard to forget even for amateurs so I don't think these needed to be listed.

#8 is probably the only other point in this list worth taking seriously.

And #9 seems more like just some philosophical shit the author threw in because 8 points didn't seem as impressive as 9 or because he smoked a doobie before writing this crap.

saw some of their articles. geez, what nonsense.

especially this one
21 Reasons To Dump A Photographer

how they come to the conclusion this is every photographer. baboons.
The author probably had a shitty relationship with a photographer who was also a douchebag and they like to generalize. That's my guess anyway. Can't think of any other reason why a photography site would make a list of why people should not date photographers.

And yet on the same site, they have 41 Reasons "to" Date a Photographer BTW, if you google 'reasons not to date a photographer', most of them mention 41 reasons lol. Still, most of them are moronic reasons just like most dating advise given online.

Also, I remember after I bought my first camera, how I would go out and take photos thinking to myself; "Well this isn't difficult". Then someone mentioned 'manual mode' which then required me to pick up a book on basic photography. I'm one of those people who usually learns by trial and error and I do much better learning hands-on instead of reading a book.

Why are these sins, and why does this guy worry about what someone does with their DSLR that they paid for with their hard earned money?

Maybe I like shooting night scenes with a high shutter speed. Maybe I don't want to get a tripod, or read the manual.
Come to think of it, I never formatted my memory card the first 2 months that I used it. The world didn't stop spinning.
Sometimes I deliberately ignore the rule of thirds just because I can. Hey! I'm putting my dogs face right in the middle of the picture...so what?:grief:
