Some poor guy probably bought the camera and managed to take a few pics before his wife found out about it and made him return it.:)
Congratulations. Looks like you got a brand new D7100 for 800 bucks.

Nope. Refurbs can be everything from demos to a simple Amazon return.

Yep congrats on that!!!! Enjoy! Sweet deal!

Cool beans!!! :excitement: In my mind, I guess I thought refurbished are all damaged items that need to be repaired, but apparently that isn't always the case. :indecisiveness: I did wonder what happens to items people return when they change their minds. Guess now I know! ;) Thanks again!

Question...I'm sure my D7100 was reset as I had to identify my language. The thing is that I don't ever remember having any camera start with the language display in Japanese (at least I think it was Japanese). It made me wonder if it is a US or Japanese model...not that it matters.

should be a usa camera if nikon usa is going to warranty it for 6 months.

The warranty is for 90 days not 6 months, but it was sold through Nikon's USA web site.

Quick general question...what are everyone's thoughts about getting an extended warranty? Is it worth it? rocketman posted an ebay link for a Mack warranty with optional coverage for drops ($88.95 for warranty plus an additional $16.99 for accidents). Cameta offers an extended warranty ($59.95) although I didn't see the optional drop coverage. Although this D7100 will be my back up body, I will use it primarily for the local high school's theater productions. I do tend to take more photos of them than I do photos for my own enjoyment so although it will be a back up, most likely it will get more shutter actuations than my D610.

I've told hark offline, but I'll say it again here, if you're going to use the camera then use the hell out of it in the 90 day window, and particularly in the first 30 days - if something's bad inside then it will likely fail in that time, and if nothing does it probably won't any time soon. The Mack warranty is great if you believe you'll be doing a lot of traveling, working outdoors in extreme conditions, and subjecting the camera to abuse above and beyond the normal. One repair will cost you more than the warranty. If you baby your equipment, and as in hark's case plan on using it primarily indoors as a second camera, then you're likely throwing money away.

That said, since the warranty appears to include 2 free sensor cleanings across the 3 year period, if you don't do cleanings yourself then you'd likely spend $100 on those, so if you need to justify it financially, there you go.

One thing I'm very unclear on with this warranty is that it is listed as 3 Year Diamond Service Under $1000. Does that mean that it only covers items of less than $1000 value, or does it mean that it will only cover service up to a total of $1000 across the life of the warranty?

Also, at the Cameta link above, there is a restriction that clearly states...

Note: Must be purchased before 3 months remain on the manufacturer's original warranty. For example, if the original warranty is for 1 year, this extended warranty must be puchased within 9 months of the camera purchase date.

This means that you'd have to buy this before you actually buy the camera with the 90 refurb warranty. The ebay link does not seem to have that restriction.

3 Year Diamond Service Under $1000--Mack offers extended warranties for electronics, but it depends upon the original price of the item. They sell for different prices. One of their warranties is for items costing between $250-$500 which costs less--and they offer extended warranties for items costing more than $1000.

All I can find are Mack extended warranties although most don't cover drops/accidents. I just wondered if there are any others so I can compare...I'm not able to find any myself which is why I am asking.

After reading through the differences between Mack warranties, a Mack Standard Warranty will only cover defects in the camera, but a Mack Diamond Warranty will also cover drops/spills. So the ebay link for the Mack Warranty wouldn't require the optional coverage of a Square-Trade extended warranty for drops/spills since it already applies (the ebay link is for a Mack Diamond Warranty). The ebay seller said the Square-Trade warranty was an add-on by ebay...it wasn't posted by him.

My D7100 & 85mm are Nikon refurbs. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another refurb item. I don't bother with ext warranties myself.

Looks like the link is up to $999.

The other place that had the same price on a refurbished D7100 is Adorama's ebay page. For some reason ebay is offline as I wanted to check their price today.
