Yes. This smaller sensor is the trade off for those better features, so your decision should be weighed up on which is more important to you. For me, its the detail, better cropability, so i'm in the 'sticking with the D7200' Club. If only they'd made it with a 24MP+ sensor i'd have been on it like a rat up a drainpipe!

In my opinion, the 20MP D500 files are superior in every way in the real world. I have both cameras, I have over 50000 clicks on the D7200 and 5000 on the D500. I don't care that the D500 has 3MP less because when I compare my experience actually using both cameras there is not a shadow of a doubt in my mind that the D500 blows away my dust gathering D7200 in every single aspect. Trade offs....NONE! Best money I ever spent!
Well I got a good deal on a second hand D500. I am somewhat disappointed. The image quality is noticeably worse than the D7200. I find the focusing a little better,and the shutter seems quieter, and the shutter speed is fast, but the D500 is not all that it was promoted to be. If speed is your thing then oh yea, but if quality is more important, then the D7200 is the answer. Sorry to rain on the D500 parade... Glade I still have my D7200.
Agree, go with lenses. Allow the D500 to drop in price its a win win. I would look into the D750, i used it for a month travelling around the british isles and its very, very capable with regards to birds in flight which is always an acid test. Landscape its unreal, great colour and barely any noise (using a 50mm 1.8d and 7-200mm f4). I was so , so impressed. For me the D750 is overlooked by many as it falls between the d7200 and d500 in price people seem to think its less set up for pros. Facts are its full frame, so will produce incredible images with reasonable glass and it can be used for a variety of things if need be. Its also a lot cheaper now. My humble opinion! I have a full frame and crop so no bias here.
