I've never shot with the 70-300mm but had the 28-300mm. On a DX camera such as yours the quality of the 28-300mm is extremely good. Can it "match" the 70-300mm? I'm guessing that you might take a slight hit in IQ shooting wide open, but close it down a click or two and you're OK. The 300mm end of the 28-300 is not quite 300mm either. But can the 70-300mm shoot from 28-70mm? Nope. There's always a trade-off with zooms, so for something that varied you're going to compromise a bit at points, but it's still a fine lens. I will say this - it's not as wide as I'd like on a DX body (which is why I sold it), and it's definitely not wide enough to make it a perfect "take only one body and one lens on vacation" lens. On an FX camera? Sure, and since getting my D600 I wish I hadn't sold it.
