55-200mm VR lens (Nikon 2166) making high pitched noise in manual focus mode

Hi everyone, hopefully this is the right forum to post in. We have a D3100 and recently bought a factory refurbished 55-200mm VR lens to replace another lens that broke. We've been able to capture great pictures with it and works really well especially in zoom mode. However, I just discovered that in manual focus mode and with VR turned on, when I press the shutter button halfway, the lens makes a high pitched noise sounding as if something is stuck. The noise goes away once I switch back to AF mode. I haven't tried it with AF and VR off to see if the noise comes back. I switched the lens with our 18-55mm VR2 lens and there's no noise coming for that one. Is this something inherent in the 55-200? is there a setting on the camera that's causing it? The refurbed lens comes with a 90 day warranty so I can get it repaired or replaced if it turns out the noise isn't normal. Any insight and help would be appreciated, thanks.
