Been watching the 5100 for a few weeks and noticed the price dropped about US$50.

Is this a sign of some sort? Replacement coming out soon?

itching to get one but wondering if I should hold off a it.

hard to say, but I suspect that the 5100 sell number is dropping due their inventory going up. Lots' of great Nikon choices right now.

I bought mine in April when the price (in the UK) was £~570 for the body & 18-55 bundle.
Luckily I was stateside when I got mine and managed to get another lens, a flash and some accessories for £~590 (converted from US$)

If you look at the bundle price a year before that, it was £~770.
The price currently here is £430.

It's technology, and like all new items, initial prices will be high, but as demand and sales picks up, prices eventually come down to a point where they will become stagnant (probably a price above the cost of manufacture).

My advice - when you have the finances to buy, just go out and do it - buy the best your budget allows.
If you wait, there will always be something bigger and better to tempt you away from what you're looking at.
And once you've bought it, accept the fact, you WILL see it cheaper somewhere else after a month or so... you'll weep a little too!!

Nikon has leaked out the fact it is discontinuing the D5100 line and is now trying to empty their inventory. There's just no room left between the D3200 and the D7000.

Local store has it at $499.95, body only (rebate already applied. Rebate expires at end of month). I'm thinking something is around the corner, early 2013.

Seems like a pretty short life for the D5100 :(

Though on the other hand, it does mean owners are in the small number that have on :)
(Not that its a collectors item or anything!)

Thanks for the tip. Yesterday was the final day for price matching at the store where I got my D5100 system. I got nearly $100 refunded to me. They totally refunded the cost of my Nikon camera bag, and I got $50 refunded for the camera and lenses...WooHoo!!!

Well, had the 5100 for several days now and been shooting a lot just to get an idea of the performance in different lighting, etc.

I fear I am suffering from the soft focus I've read from other posts here. However, I resolve to get to know the camera to improve this as I'm going to assume, for now, that I am the problem.

I also ordered a Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR FX lens to help resolve the soft focus thing :)

I also noticed there were some particles, don't know what, on that lens thing in front of the sensor. So I cleaned it off with a little blowing brush.

I hope to post some pictures soon!
