Am in need of new 50mm lens, but am uncertain wether to get the G or D version. Would certainly like to hear from advocates of both lenses.

After using the D and G lenses for a while, I prefer the G lenses more since they are much quieter than the D lenses and are sharper compared to the older design lenses.

You are better off in spending the extra $$ to get the Nikon 50mm f1.8G IMO.

The G version is a great improvement optically over the older D version. It is a lot sharper, as well as has less CA.

If you are using modern digital cam bodies, you should just go ahead and get the G version. If you are using older film cameras, the D version should be the one to go for (due to the aperture ring).

I've owned the D and the G and I prefer the G for all the reasons mentioned above, especially sharpness and CA. I also think the bokeh looks better on the G.
