My 28-70mm 3.5D died and I bought a 28-105mm 3.5-4.5D.I loved the first lense and am enjoying the new one but wonder if anyone thinks there is a difference in IQ between the 2 other than reach? Is buying another 28-70mm totally redundant?

Totally redundant. You bought yourself an excellent zoom, as good as the previous one in terms of overall quality, plus with the greater range of focal lengths... What exactly "died" in the 28-70mm - chip, zoom mechanism, focus mechanism...? Or you dropped it (broke it)?

The focusing mechanism. In auto focus it wouldn't focus in infinity and manually you felt some thing catching or stuck.Technician (across from B&H)couldn't fix it saying parts are not obtainable.

Sad, But, (don't get me wrong) I would try with the genuine Nikon repair shop - I am almost certain such parts CAN be found (chances are, the belt-shaped printed circuit that is bending and stretching with each zooming out and in, got broken), and repair shouldn't have costed you more than, say, 50$ (of course, such lens, well preserved, or even in a "mint" condition, can be obtained at a 50-80$ on a "flea market")...

Redundant it may be but just bought another 28-70mm D for $55.00.(Delivered)Mint.Couldn't pass it up.Amazing how such a fine classic lens could go so cheap!Any other old lenses of this quality recommended?

I have the 28-105mm 3.5-4.5 as well and I bought it after much research and reading what a wonderful lens it is in terms of IQ. So far those reviews have been true and I am glad I got a copy.

I also have the 18-70 AF-S lens and the 28-105mm is definitely much better than that lens. Never had the 28-70mm but had the 28-80mm D lens.

I say you have a great lens.

I also recommend the 35-105mm "D" One touch Zoom. Very sharp and a beautiful warm image.

Here, in Serbia (where I live), a AF 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5D can be purchased for about 80$, mint... I bought me a "as good as a brand new one" AF 28-100mm f/3.5-5.6 (yeah, plasticky but with the good optics!) for 45$...

I have the 35-105D.Not as good as either the 28-105 or 28-70mm.IMHO.

I would say the reach is the main difference between the 2 lenses: they are both excellent. I loved my 28-70d f/3.5-4.5, a lot--here is 1 from it, one very cold, October sunrise in Vermont.
