If you want to upgrade why stick with the same lens length? What camera are you shooting with? What kind of photos do you like to take? What does the lens you presently not do that you would like for it to do?

Filling out your profile will answer some of those questions for us.

Hi Don,
Thanks for reply. I'm on my iPad. Tried to fill out profile and didn't work for some reason. Anyway I have a D7100 and I use a 18-200mm vr with it. Just thinking about a lighter walk around lens. However, I just read a post about the 16-85vr, looks interesting. Other lenses I have are 35 & 50mm, 70-300mm vr, 10-24mm, waiting on 105mm nikkor to arrive for macro and portraits. I shoot anything and everything and am always learning. Love B&W too.

The 18-55mm is not the best of lenses. It is cheap and does a pretty good job. It comes as part of the kit on many of the cameras like the d3100 and the D5100. But you probably already know that. Many people like the 18-105 for a walk around lens. A little better range and it is good quality too. You might want to put that into the mix to look at.

The 18-55 is one of my favorite lenses. Even though it is a "kit lens" (as if that makes it bad) it has received many good reviews. And, for the price, it is hard to beat. It is a carry everywhere, handy, lens. The VR is something I would also suggest.
