18-300mm dx OR 28-300mm fx? Am I wasting my $?

Hello I have the d5100 kit that includes an 18-55 and a 55-300 but I want some very high quality glass in the form of an all in one.... I have about $1000 to spend and am considering one of these two options but really want some feedback /advice from some more experienced photographers....please and Thank you. :)

I'm afraid the term "high quality glass" and "all in one" are mutually exclusive. If high quality glass is what you desire, you're better off looking into primes or up your budget and buy professional zooms like the 24-70mm and 70-200mm.

That's quite a range you have covered to be wanting an all in one high quality lens.
What kind of photography do you do more of, this will help more in giving you advice towards the type of high quality lens more suited to your needs.

I am somewhat inexperienced still but I think I like to capture landscapes and portraits.... I am now seriously considering a tamron sp 24-70 f2.8

I have the 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR. works with DX and fx. Best of near and Far distance photo,Sharp Quality lens & Zoom with Wide Angle Views. Verygood useful lens,you don't have to change lens, for everyday shooting.

If you want landscape then surely wider than 24 is better, and you already have a very capable 18-55 for that.
Go for something like a Nikon 12-24mm f/4.
With the left over change, you could feed your portrait habit with a 35mm or 50mm f/1.8 AND squeeze in a SB-700 flash.

And all that for the price you're willing to pay for the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8
