My small zoom kit lens has some play in the end of the barrel. Is this just a product of the cheap lens or is it a defect?

I know most HDR is taken with 3, 5, or 7 exposures and then combined in a software program. Can the separate exposures be taken minutes or even hours apart?

Why do some EXIF data shutter speeds display as 10/8000 instead of 1/800, or 10/2500 instead of 1/250?

I really like my D3100 body despite its lack of bells and whistles. I want to pick up a better lens, but but is there a limit to the ROI of a good lens with the D3100?
