One thing that I discovered recently, is that the 18-55; at least my version - VR-II; makes a great macro lense, if nothing else is at hand. If the subject is more that 2 inches it can fill up the DX sensor. At 3 inches you have to back up. 50mm prime 18-55 at 55mm So keep you 18-55 handy...

After taking a lot of images of flowers at minimum distance, I perceived that the images at 55mm are much bigger that with the 50mm prime. A quick check and I learnt that the zoom has a closest focusing distance of 0.28m while the prime 0.45m. That results in a much larger image with the zoom...
