I would like to start playing with panoramics. What's a good non-photoshop tool to stitch photos together?

HDR processed using Photomax. I'm not thrilled with the result. I need to crop off the right edge. My intent was to capture a somewhat scary mood and pickup the dim glow of the ticket booth in the background. I also note there is strong ghosting around the trees and the carousel poles on...

I just don't get it. When should I use it and how do the different levels of low, med, high affect the overall image? I've experimented a little but never been happy with the output.
