Aquarium sea fans - first attempt

Feedback appreciated. I am trying to photographically capture all the cool occupants that live inside of my saltwater aquarium in the best pictures I can achieve. These little fans are probably my favorite and not easily accessed due to where they have decided to set up camp. Lighting is also a nightmare.

Hand held shot from D5100
Aperture priority
Shutter: 1/80
Aperture F8
ISO 800
Manual focus
VR off
Lens AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm
+14 Polaroid magnification adapter
Lighting - overhead led aquarium lighting with additional led lighting from the right side of the picture.

From what I can tell the first thing I need is to find some way to add lighting in from the left to balance out shadows.

Left photo is the original raw and untouched. Right photo is cropped how I would like to have shot it (the wall got in my way) and adjusted in Photoshop CS6 to enhance the fans.

Thanks again for any input. Photographing my aquarium occupants has become a bit of a fun winter time quest.

I would try to throw a narrow range spot on them and underexpose to get rid of the background. They are certainly beautiful organisms.
