A Great Egret at a local pond a couple of days ago took to the air for several feet and pounced on a fish. That's not their normal strategy, but it worked just fine.
🙂
I was glad to see this bird finally catch a fish, since a couple of Great Blue Herons in the same pond were catching them left and right. (P.S. for you Florida folks, yes we have Great Egrets in Colorado for part of the year. Just not the thousands that you are lucky enough to have all year. Any yes, that's snow you see in the air. )

Long-billed Dowitcher this morning. You might be looking at this bird and wonder what is wrong with its bill, was the tip bent in an accident or something? No, this is rhynchokinesis, the ability of some birds to bend the tip of their beak. It is thought this is an adaptation in order to more easily grasp things like bugs, worms, crustaceans, etc. underwater. Pretty cool, I'd say. :)

And it has mating lores.

How much snow are you getting this week?

We got 6-7 inches at our house, and it all melted within 24 hours. It will help a bit, but we still need a lot of rain to catch up. Some places in the mountains got as much as two feet. I know you haven't had your usual rain in Florida this winter, either. Fire danger in both of our states right now!
