I saw a Harrier today, but it was soooooo far away! Got off three bad shots before it disappeared in the woods.
Yeah, they seem to appear out of nowhere, glide along and disappear again. That's why the males are called Gray Ghosts. Since they fly so low to the ground it's tough to see them coming, and they rarely stick around for long. We saw several in New Mexico, but like you, they were usually quite a distance away.
