I miss the days when trains had a caboose on the rear. If you missed the engine you still had a chance at a nice shot of the caboose. Now it's a picture of a FRED on the end. It just ain't the same. :cautious:

The human element is gone as well, a victim of the FRED. :confused: Most everyone enjoyed a friendly wave from the caboose. [About 1975, Plus-X, Nikkormat FTn]

From 40 years ago in October 1985 at Montgomery, AL. In the background is Montgomery Union Station and its trainshed, both of which survive today. Crews disliked the steps on these, calling them "shin barkers". It was hard to climb up without barking your shin on the second step. [Nikon N2020, Kodachrome]

A time exposure from 08/19/1989 at Anniston, AL. Not wanting to spend the money on the Nikon attachment to take time exposures with my N2020, I figured if I shorted the two contacts it accessed, I could keep the shutter open. It worked, though it was kind of a pain with my tiny alligator clips in the dark. [Kodachrome]
