Hello Everyone!
Am new here and I was hoping to find help on this problem I encountered:
"The RAW image extension is required to display this file"
That is what I get for 7 out of 130 raw files I took from a recent trip
I shoot RAW+Basic with my D7100
Thank you in advance to Everyone who will reply!

Assuming you are viewing with a Windows PC here.

Nikon Rumors reported in April about the NEF codec is no longer available to download at Nikon.

Reddit has a thread about this.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Nikon/comments/1kyslcq
And in that thread is a link to a hidden archive for the codec download.

Another non-Nikon solution (maybe).

It also appears that if you might install something like RawTherapee on you computer for editing, the open-source RawLib extension is installed with that. So that may also make things work.

Thank you very much for this and your first reply, too, BF Hammer!

And yes, you are correct.
Viewing using Windows

Am going to check out codec and RawTherapee

I realized I should have shared these 2 screenshots
1. The error message
2. File explorer view showing how some of the raw images are displaying, and some do.

Thanks very much again

It's been a long time since I've used windows, did you try clicking on link below the missing codec message to see if it would install it?

wordfairy, hello and welcome!

I am a windows user (Windows 11) and have been using a program called "irfanview" to "look" through Nikon RAW files before editing. I saw this tip on another photo site. It works very well for me, you can set it up any way you like. I set it to "open" RAW file extensions. This way when pulling up any stored RAW files it will allow easy viewing.

Windows photo viewer will start up correct but then turn darker making your image look strange (sadly this is how Windows is working at this time) even with the correct codec installed.

You can even set it to open a file you are viewing with an installed photo editor, this makes looking at your shots "easy".

I'm not sure if I should post a link to their site, its an easy google below is their banner

Hope this helps
