Video focus pulling in Nikon z5ii

Hi everyone,

I’m using a Nikon Z5 II with the 28–75mm f/2.8 lens for video. I want to achieve smooth, cinematic focus transitions when tapping between two subjects on the screen.

I’ve already tried:

  • Movie mode with AF-F
  • AF speed set to –5
  • AF subject tracking sensitivity set to 1
  • Wide-area AF (no face/eye detect)
  • Touch to focus between two objects
But the focus still snaps too quickly instead of gliding smoothly.

Am I missing another setting, or is this a limitation of the Z5 II autofocus system?
Would manual focus with peaking be my only option for true cinematic pulls?

Any tips from other Z5 II users would be greatly appreciated!

Manual focus might be the only other option. Keep in mind this is a still camera with video capability. Quick autofocusing is demanded by still camera users.

Here is a short video and explanation from Nikon on the technique. It was made for DSLRs, but the technique is also usable on a mirrorless.

I have watched video on you tube.
If nikon z6 can do this then lastest expeed 7 can handle this.
Any specific setting required it.
I think the most relevant way the Expeed 7 processor handles the autofocus is that it will be faster and snap to the focus point faster than a Z6 first generation. And that is what is happening for you. As a still photographer, that is what I demand.

I imagine this can be addressed in firmware if Nikon felt some motivation to make a change to expand that AF speed range menu item.
