October Monthly Assignment: "Something spooky, eerie or scary" (Marilynne's choice)

IMPORTANT TO READ THE FOLLOWING:

Let's get shooting! CREATIVITY/TECHNIQUE rules in this challenge, but there are a few guidelines:

1. Any photo submitted for a monthly assignment
must be taken using a Nikon Camera! All submissions must be taken during the month specified in the assignment thread and taken by YOU including all parts of composites!

2. If the EXIF does not show using a browser EXIF app, listing the camera and capture date/time below the photo is required. Listing exposure info, lens & focal length is encouraged so others can learn.

3. Other than that, it's all up to your interpretation of the theme. Any photo will be accepted, SOOC or edited, doesn't matter.

4. Photos must be posted in this thread to be considered. Links to photos will not be considered an entry (In other words, no Flikr, Photobucket, or similar links)

5. Only THREE entries per member for each assignment. Please post entries separately (1 photo per post) and number the entry. It is acceptable to delete a post and submit a new entry, replacing the image within a post is not.

6. Entries will be judged by the number of likes received.

7. The top 5 shots will be displayed in a separate thread and will be displayed in no particular order.

8. This is intended to be a FUN challenge. No critiques unless specifically asked. Also, please limit posts to just photos and brief descriptions/titles. Any comments/discussion should occur elsewhere, PLEASE.

As listed in other challenges, please note: NO CASH OR PRIZES will be awarded for this Monthly Assignment.

HAVE FUN!

Will a ghost town do? Not really spooky, eerie, or scary, but there is something about a place like this, almost completely abandoned.
This is Bodie, (well, part of it, anyway; there's more to it that I could reasonably take in in one picture, even in a stitched panorama) a ghost town that has been turned into a state park, preserved in a state of “arrested decay”.

It is said that there is a curse on this place, that if you take anything out of this place, even a pebble, that bad things will happen to you. Reportedly, the California State Parks agency receives significant numbers of packages containing small items taken from Bodie, sent by people who hope that returning those items will lift the curse that they claim to have experienced.

As a practical matter, it is very much illegal to take anything from Bodie, because doing so is contrary to the goal of preserving the ghost town. Anything that is removed, even if it is later returned, cannot reliably be put back where it was.

Also from Bodie. I don't know if “eerie” is how I would describe it, but something did seem very strange to me about this bed, in one building, with money all over it. The money appears, for the most part, to be much more modern than anything that belongs in Bodie. I don't know what the deal is, but my best guess is that some superstition must be making the rounds, about it being good luck to toss money through the window, on to this bed. I wonder if leaving things in Bodie, that don't belong, might violate the spirit both of the supposed curse against taking things from Bodie, as well as the more practical laws against doing so.

Bob,

I did not violate that rule. Both my posts included the relevant pictures as attachments; and displayed properly when I was editing them.

I do not know why they are failing to properly display now, but it is very clearly an issue on this site's end, and not on mine.

I'll take another look at the posts, and see if I can fix them, but I probably cannot. Whatever needs to be fixed can probably only be fixed on the site's end.

It apparently has to do with the size of the image. These were both very large images, and I reduced the JPG quality to get the file size under 2 megabytes, which appears to be a limit that this forum imposes. The forum accepted the files, but does not display them, except as links to separately display the images.

I created new versions of these images, at smaller resolution, but my usual 95% JPG quality, and those upload and display just fine. I left the links in to the higher-resolution, lower-quality images, in case anyone wants to see those.
