Post your Train shots!

I'm sure I'd enjoy both very much. I should check eBay to see what used D5100s are selling for. Do you find that your GTI limits your railfanning with its low ground clearance? I'm used to a pickup that I can take most anywhere. I'm guessing that the GTI's ground clearance would be only a bit less that Mrs. Sandpatch's Golf which allows pretty decent clearance. I've already told the Dealership that I'd return someday with a tape measure to check things out underneath. I like taking train pictures, but I prize my oil pan too.

I love my GTI, but it isn't going some places your truck will. IMO they are great cars & will do things on a twisty road that would have a truck into the ditch. Although a truck will laugh at rutted roads & rocks. Life is a compromise. Maybe an Alltrack wagon would get you what you need as far as ground clearance goes & a sporting drive.

Back on topic sort of.....

Bellevue Ohio - A westbound NS merchandise freight passes a looong auto-rack train heading onto the Fostoria district.

Very nice Sandpatch.:encouragement: At one time those CSX rebuilds with the home built cabs struck me as quite odd. As time has gone by I've grown to like them. Something a bit different in a sea of sameness.

Thank you. I'm still adjusting to them, but I agree that in a sea of widecabs, the CSX rebuilds provide relief. With NS now earnestly embarking on their version of Precision Scheduled Railroading, it'll be interesting to see what changes come to their locomotive fleet. By 2021, NS hopes to reduce their locomotive count by 500 units and that'll likely bring retirement to older models. However, NS's massive fleet of aging Dash-9s will find renewed lives through conversion to AC.

It may have been a mirage. :) Spotted it setting in a yard in Tuscaloosa a couple of years ago. Haven't run across it again, not that I spend much time there. Should have stopped and photographed it when I saw it.

Ah HA! I just found a reference to it, No. 3881 owned by Watco and painted in U. of Alabama Birmingham green with UAB's fire breathing dragon on its sides. Pretty neat! I hope you can catch up with it soon.

Caught NS 192 advancing north in Blythewood, SC late this afternoon in rapidly fading light. Gosh I love digital photography -- this was taken at 1/800 at an ISO of 2000. Upon seeing the ISO reading, I almost didn't take the shot. I'm glad that I gave it a try. Once again, just amazing when I compare with film's capabilities.

Took these on my last trip north to Bellevue OH. 757 is back home where she will rest on home rails.

From what I gather NW donated 757 to the city in 1958, but the city didn't have a place to properly display her. In 1960 she was off to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania where she sat outside rotting in the elements until February of this year when she finally came back home. A group of hard core volunteers got her road worthy enough that she could be towed home with a 25 mph speed limit. The morning of Feb 14 she was parked up where she now sits.

I doubt she will ever be under steam again, but it's wonderful to see the big Berkshire 2-8-4 where she belongs having started her career here.

That would be neat, not the one I saw. Have to find that 96 mile of track Watco is using, that would be a great sighting. I think this was it Alabama Southern Railroad (University of Alabama Crimson Tide) - crimson and white. I believe it also had the A on it. Maybe its been repainted the green.

The plot thickens on the U. of Alabama unit. I just found some Internet photos of Alabama Southern units in red and white with Pulling For The Tide on their sides and U of Alabama 'A's on each side of the nose. Pretty neat!

You were in the proper area for sure. Looks like former GM&O track, with ex-L&N from Tuscaloosa to Brookwood, AL. Their main yard is in Tuscaloosa. Maybe it'll be laying over there when you're in town next time.

Just for the fun of it, I found my old Sawyer's Pana-Vue slide viewer and took a handheld D5100 photo of a slide displayed in its 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" window. I was surprised with the result as seen below, though anything larger isn't very sharp.

Stopped in Spartanburg, SC today and found my way to Mangnolia Interlocking. With the wisteria in bloom, a shot was to be had. This is NS Train 213.

Hey Skwaz, I have to ask! Two steam passenger trains a few hours apart on the same stretch of track is amazing . Was this some type of celebration, a rail fan excursion, or are steam trains still used on your side of the pond, or? Curious minds want to know?
