NIK Collection free?

Downloaded it yesterday & subscribed to the YouTube channel to learn how to use it. So far so good...!

Only 'proviso' is that I've read in a number of places that in making it free, Google are basically not planning to develop this software further ie there will be no future updates. Still, it will probably be good enough for me for quite some time in its present state.

Pay attention to the U-Point Technology they are talking about. That is the key to using this program. In the plugin it is called "Add Control Point" Click on it and pick a color you want to change in brightness, contrast, detail etc and change the circle size to include as much as you can without including to much more.

Check out some of the youtube videos on using it. The more you learn about it the more useful it gets. Vivesa 2 is my favorite plugin.

Thanks Don, you're right - until I checked out the tutorial videos I was a bit lost. The control point technology works *really* well. It manages the transitions between selected areas and the adjacent areas very well indeed. I've found I've also been using Vivesa2 mostly, but will investigate the others more thoroughly.

It looks like it doesn't work with Windows 10 according to their website. Has anyone used it with Win 10?

I downloaded it yesterday and tried one filter. It did work and I am on Win10. I am using it as a standalone and not as a plug in to any other software. Hope that helps. I will be playing with it a little more, hopefully tonight, so if I find it doesn't work with Win10, I will post an update.

Nik Software Free

Can't believe no-one has posted this yet. Google has announced that from now on Nik software will be free and they will give refunds to anyome who has paid for it recently.

I guess this means it may not be updated anymore, but hey!! free is good :D

I can only assume this means NIK Tools is now "dead": No further updates, no future releases.

This is my worry exactly. It hasn't been updated for a while (at least I didn't notice any updates) and Google say they are going to focus on mobile photo apps.

I'm afraid one day, after an operating system upgrade, or after Photoshop update, Nik Tools will simply stop working. For ever.

I cannot imagine processing photos without them. Control points make any adjustments so quick and easy! I'd say what would take 30 minutes in Photoshop can be done in 5 minutes with Nik Tools. I really cannot see myself going back to masks and adjustment layers.

It looks like another example of "acquire and kill".

It is till good even if it is never updated, and for free it's even better. I rarely use Nik anymore, I've moved on to other methods but every now and then I'll use it and still love HDREfex

I got it tried it and like it, it has been on the agenda, but it thought lightroom was sufficient, not wanting to put money in software.
I do have the impression Nik makes it easier to get the best out of the RAW data. => fear it will be a big hit for the other add ons, when you are looking at NIK you are not buying something else.

it seems more that they will integrate it for free in Android and then selling it to PC users seems strange.

Re: Nik Software Free

You have the capability of deleting your post if you feel the need.

I know ;) I started a whole new thread coz I didn't see this one. I think mine was merged to this one if you have been able to quote me. My comment was re deleting the entire thread....which I cannot do (I don't think)

Ah, I see. I was confused because I thought for sure you must know how to do that, but just in case....
To my knowledge, you can't delete a thread. BTW, I like your animated avatar.

I started this thread, and going to the Administrative drop down arrow, one of the options is to delete this thread. Not sure if the feature is only for Contributing Members, or if it is for everyone who starts a thread.

I just checked a thread I started, I don't see an "administrative" drop down arrow. I just have "thread tools", etc.
That is good information to know, thanks.

I merged it with the existing thread. Duplicate threads get confusing for people.

I don't think you are supposed to be able to delete threads since other people may have responded. You can delete posts though by using the "Edit Post"link at the bottom of the post.

Will have to check but I don't think you are supposed to have the Administrative link. That one can get dangerous.

It's only available on threads I started. As I said, it might be a perk of being a Contributing Member.

I remain hopeful that Google will do with Nik what they did with SketchUp: sell it on to someone to update and develop at a reasonable cost to the user.
