Strange thing. I have my Windows Update set to the "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to download them and install them" setting.
I have it set like this for ages. All of a sudden I haven't received any notifications for an update for almost a week. (I usually get one every day.)
I went to check for updates manually this morning to see what's what, and I noticed that the last update was installed 2 days ago. WTF? I don't remember installing anything.

I go check my settings and I see that it is now set for "Install updates Automatically" . I know I didn't change it. The only thing I can think of, is that Windows changed it when I reserved a Win 10 copy last week.

I now changed it back . Let's see if it reverts back after a shutdown/restart.

You're right, it's probably from reserving Win 10. As part of the reservation I do believe it states it will automatically download it when it's available and let you know when you can install it. It probably had to make that changed to your Windows update settings so that it could download 10 when available. Makes sense at least.

I never bother with any windows updates (apart from antivirus)

I just think its more on the PC to slow it down, new PC built just before Christmas, and still running just as good.

I have learned the hard way that "update" does not always mean better. Some apps want to update to start putting advertising on them. An early iPod update REMOVED the helpful traffic reports from iMaps. (It's back now.) An update to an iPhone 4s caused it not to work properly with my car Blutooth, something that many people complained about online including owners of Aston Martins, yet there was no way to go back to the older OS. My policy now is that, if something is working the way I want it to, I don't do the updates unless they show us exactly what changes are being made.

For example, LR and PS CC are advising that updates are available right now, but only so they can add RAW profiles for new cameras. Don't need that yet, so...

I never asked or subscribed for any update to windows 10. All of the sudden out of the blue there is an icon in my systray that offers me a free upgrade. Thanks for the offer but I like to decide myself and I dont want something in the background spying on which OS I have. I didnt even trust it, if it was genuin until i googled it. Btw, what happened to windows 9?

At work my PC will just interrupt what I am doing, start a long update, then restart. It saves my work, but what a pain to have to wait around for ten minutes before I can get back to work. I didn't know I could set it to NOT auto update. Our IT guy is kind of a nut case and wants us all to have things set up his way on our computers. I'll have to set this up on the sly.

At home I use Macs, and while they have their own irritations, at least they don'y interupt me in the middle of my work. :)

I tell it NOT to check nor download unless I tell it to. Don't need that useless clutter, and my 8 works just fine. Had 8.1, but it b0rked the card slot so I rolled back.
