Hi all,

Looking to purchase a remote control for some astrophotography. problem is I can't find the IR mode in the menu to be able to use a remote control. I'm right in thinking the D3200 has an Infra Red receiver?

Not sure about the D3200, but the D5300 has a setting in the menu under Camera, Release MOde, then Delayed remote or Quick Remote. This may not be exact, but pretty close. Hope that is what you are looking for.

Only option I found mentioning a remote says "Remote on duration" and a remote control symbol. Which would suggest it has the function to accept an IR remote control. But i've been looking at the front of the camera and cannot find anything that looks like an IR sensor.

Hmm found the receiver from looking at the Nikon website. i'll try and dig out the manual and read up about it. Thanks for your help all the same :)

Back of the camera below the Multi-Selector there's a Release Mode button that allows you to choose between Single/Multiple shots, Self-Timer and Remote (2 sec delay or instantaneous). It's on Manual pg 31

BDH, I keep forgetting about that button on my D5300. Just a couple of days ago, I was using the Remote and set it in the menu every time. One day I will learn to use the shortcuts. Ha!

Same here totally forgot about it. That's perfect. Just ordered myself the nikon remote control and found a nearby observatory with no light pollution and a free viewing area for people to stargaze and take photos. :D

If you're going to do long exposure stuff, I'd look in to a wired remote with a timer.

Plus the IR remote lack range and IIRC can't engage focus, only the shutter.
