Strange inverted Reflection from Flash ???

Hello...

Just wondering if anyone can explain this strange inverted reflection of a Firefighter... I have been taking photos of Emergemcy Services for well over 30 yrs and have never seen anything like this before either from Film or Digital. There was no water on the ground or any other reflective surface near by....................Taken with a D300 , Nikkor 28-70 F2.8 , SB 800 , F3.5 , ISO 640.

It's flare, and you've seen it a million times. You just never noticed it because it's rarely this pronounced.

Try taking the filter off the lens.

I think @480sparky nailed it. The flare shows up on the opposite side of the lens center from the light source. So, this kind of flare would always be flipped horiveritcally (<<<<<<new word. I just made it up.)

Thanks for the replies.... There was is a Hoya UV on the lens ...and a lens hood... looking at the image now this evening and 480Sparkys thoughts , it makes sense now..
Eyelights lines and Inverse Law make it more plausible....
It was just that I had never seen this before...with any Reflective Stripes ...
