Your ideal lens

Walking around the local park the other day, took a couple of lens with me, 55-200mm zoom and 50mm prime,

And that got me thinking, what would be the ideal lens to have.

I was thinking along the lines of 18-600mm zoom with say F1.8, and would have to be lightweight, and even better with built in macro.

If you could make a camera lens, what would it be?

I have so many, but I would say that the one I use the most is either my 105mm f/1.8 or my 180mm f/2.8 AIS

I'm maybe strange but I'd not fancy a mother of all lenses.

I got hooked on the Tam for a while but normally I have lens days. When going out without a purpose, I pick one out and shoot it all day, or days, and when done, select another to do the same. It forces me to approach some shots differently because I haven't always got the required lens for it.

Having a MOAL would end in me limiting myself by doing what I'd always do.

I don't think there is any one "ideal" lens for all situations ... unless you want to look at it as the lens that's on your camera at the time you're able to capture that shot is the ideal one.

Unless I know I'm only going to be doing one type of shot, there are too many variables which is why I still typically carry 2-3 lenses with me (1 on camera, another 1-2 in the bag).

I like using my 8-1200 f/1.2 15:1 Micro pancake. The new version that uses 49mm filters, not the old one that uses 55mm.
You have one too? Nikon promised me that that would be a "one off" lens just for me. Crap, $65,000 down the drain!

A dual purpose lens:

I'm thinking it would sell like hot cakes down in the US ;)

My ideal lens would be one that is quality glass, great construction, but does not cost 4 figures..I paid less for my first car than some of these lenses..

I'm just the opposite. I don't like being forced into anything. When I go out shooting on the weekends I usually have no idea what I'm going to end up with at the end of the day. This is what makes it fun for me. I would love to have a Tamron 16-300mm, so I can just carry 2 lenses all the time.
