Very sad day today at the swans nest, first i thought something had killed the babies then i saw what had happened, there is a small wire fence in front of the nest and the one surviving baby couldn't get through it so i guess the others starved to death.I contacted the ranger and he said oh there is something wrong with that nest they have been sitting too long,he then started to walk away and i lost my rag,the out come was he contacted another ranger to come and look at it,in that 30 min the baby found a hole big enough to get through, but if they take it back there tonight it will probably die.
Unfortunately its on part of the lake you cant get to with the boats or i would have hired a boat and cut the fence down myself,we only had sandwiches with us so fed them to the swans, the adults ate every bit before the baby could get any so i think they had stayed with for the last few days and not been out to feed themselves as normally they would make sure the baby got some.
If i had not been going other places for the last two days i would have seen the problem and sorted it,it was my intention to follow there growth until they could fly but with only one chick that may not happen.

What is the fencing? Is this one of those were helping mother nature (the swans) whether they needs it or not?

Its an area they are trying to establish reads in,the small fence serves no purpose at all,its just another case of inmates running the asylum, too late this year but if the swans start rebuilding there next year i can assure you the fence will be gone.
