Still Life Lighting

I did my 1st still life attempt today, and as I am totally in the dark...yuk, yuk...in regard to lighting I thought I'd ask what kind of lighting is good to begin with. I have an SB-700 flash and an R1 system I got in anticipation of this. Well all I really did today was use a desk lamp and the 700, but most shots I just used ambient light in the room. Any advice would be great...
Thanks

Kind of. Play with the light intensity and location of the flowers to get some sharp crisp lines on a smooth wall. It will take some playing with, but it could be cool.

The lighting and shadows seem somewhat harsh to me. It tends to blow out the highlights. Direct sun from say a window, can be softened with a white bedsheet.
