just bought and installed the NIK suite (for ~$128 btw) and now i get a dialog when i start up Photoshop..

NIK_dialog.jpg

not exactly sure what to use it for anyway but when i click on any one of the buttons i get this error..

Nik_error.jpg

i should add though that all the Nik stuff does show up under the Filters menu in PS and works fine from there. i just don't understand what the dialog is for and why nothing works.

It's sounds like when PS loads up it is unable to startup the StrongNoiseFilter plugin. I'm not really sure if it's a PS plugin or Nik plugin but possibly a reinstall could fix the problem.

Mine has nothing to do with not finding anything. As a programmer in a former life, since it seems pretty prevalent with this ONE add-in manufacturer, I'm gonna guess it's a deliberate form of 'awareness' pop-up.

From the linked article...

This message occurs when Photoshop is launched in a bit depth mode which a plug-in doesn't support. To correct this, check the optional plug-ins documentation to ensure Photoshop is set to run in the proper 32-bit or 64-bit mode corresponding with the plug-in being used.

I'm thinking you can set something in the Photoshop preferences that will allow you to send the image file to the Nik plug-in in the proper mode. I've never had the issue.

That little dialogue comes up when you open PS and is a quick link thru to the NIK products rather than going thru the PS menus. It is part of the NIK package, so installs with NIK. You can just leave it there in the background while editing in PS and use it when you want NIK or just do as I do and close it and then go thru the PS menu options to open NIK. Personal preference. :D
