From a critique perspective, I like the composition of both, but thats about it. They seem kinda drab, perhaps poor lighting that day. They don't seem to be very colorful subjects so there's just nothing about them that makes these shot pop and perhaps not much to work with in post processing.

The spider was in the shade. I even went back the next day with a tripod to see if I could get more. The frog was brown in a brown pond. I just liked the framing inbetween in bamboo.

What Rick was saying I agree with. The fact that the spider was in the shade shouldn't stop you from making an interesting picture. This is where post processing is necessary if you want to get results. This is one thing I always tell my friends who want to get into photography: "Take time to really learn a good picture editing program".
Also, when you ask for critics, you'll get some. Remember to take all of them with a grain of salt since critic is only one other person's opinion about his personal taste and what he would have done to improve your picture. But no one is going to walk with your shoes if you get my drift.

Now, this is my attempt to improve your spider shot with contrast, saturation etc.

As for the frog shot, even if you like it, you won't get me to like it. I find it very unusual composition that does nothing to attract my eyes and keep them looking at the picture.
