Wud's project 365

Hahaha! Yes, lions. I keep calling them tigers.. like I call cucumber carrot.

I use mask with hard, very small brush, zoomed all the way in. First magic wand though, for a rough selection.

I really like all of your zoo shots!
I visited a zoo the other day but couldn't even get a good image without all kinds of fences and junk in the foreground. And also, you just make the images look nice. Very good job! :)

The tiger, not happy about the background (white stripes from a roof.. not possible to get nature as bg :/).

I don't know that I would have looked to darken it to hide it as much as to obscure it as much as possible. Without seeing the unedited shot I don't know just how possible that is, but (I'll save you my example) I did a quick edit with PSE 9 (all I have on this machine) and if I had the tools to select properly around the whiskers I think it would have been very convincing after lowering the contrast and adding additional blur to everything to the right and behind the cat. Even just the addition of a more blurry background might have helped, even though you have nice bokeh as is.

Or you could mitigate most of the problem with a square crop. Here's my edit with just added blur and the square crop. Admittedly it gives the lion less room to move, so maybe a 4:5 crop would have been better - but you get the idea.

Your edit Jake shows much better visual impact but I agree that it should probably be 4:5. It is often all about the aspect.

Day 84.

I see your ideas, I'll try working some more on the lion (called Tiger).. still annoys me though. I like the textured background, well, will see what I can do.

Hope its okay posting this - I did pictures at a funeral today.

Grandpaw of a friend of mine, the family were so sweet and I was invited for lunch afterwards. Of course no pictures of sad people, just flowers, coffin and then a few overall shots after lunch.

Did it feel odd, snapping photos of a funeral set-up? Not that it should, but I can imagine it would. There is beauty in all of the shots, the B&W being my fave of the bunch, just not something you see every day.

Actually no. Of course the funeral itself touched me but I felt completely fine doing the images. Told about it to a couple of friends and most think its a bit "weird" but okay, I think of it as - of course the widow would like some images.

Maybe you already know but in the old days many had a photographer to come out when someone in the close family died, everybody put on their best clothes and then you got a family picture with the dead in, sitting in a chair.

I think the family will be pleased with these photo and that looks like a beautiful church. If you do pose the deceased they should have a drink in one hand and a cigar in the other. Just for future reference.

Mai, your funeral pictures show a great deal of sensitivity from your part and I think they are very nicely done. Real classy shots.
Thanks for sharing.

Mai, You did a very nice, professional, tactful job on the funeral shots.

Re: Wud's project 365

Funeral photos tend to be a very European thing. My father's family is from Russia and some of the only images I have of many relatives are taken around the open casket of a family member. Some thought it odd when we took photos to share with my Dad's family in Russia when he passed away last year, but America is a very young nation with little regard, or understanding of age old traditions.

You did a lovely job on the photos, Mai. I also love the traditional casket. I've been to way too many funerals in my lifetime and I just don't get the American tradition of the big, shiny metal box. When we had to choose something for my father a casket like this was nowhere to be seen among the choices. Maybe I need to start working on my own pine box now?

I dont know how often a funeral are photographed here but guess it's not so obvious as most pictures are taken before people enter. Perhaps it's also elderly who do it the most? In dk I mean.

I've never seen an open coffin.

Had my first photo course today, went really good. All my ladies managed to get some sharp images (with manual settings!) of my dog who.... only wanted to run sometimes ;) My other puppy had another (third) seizure last night so we haven't gotten much sleep, any of us, I am awfully tired now. Managed to squeeze a shot on the way home, completely forgot to get one of my ladies in action.

I asked them to mail me the shot they worked on, I'll post them here too.

*Uploader won't do as I say, posting the image later.

Me too. He is okay now but it really sucks. My hope was to find the cause but we have gotten most of the tests you can do, only need one more on his liver, if nothing, then he is probably epileptic.
