Walking in London on Thursday, from the Port of London (by the Tower of London), up river to Canary Wharf. The Port of London is where all the spices and foods were imported all those centuries ago. They'd land at Southwark and end up on market stalls in Borough. I spotted various signs that indicated that the Pilgrim Fathers, although from southwest England, actually set sail from London.
The Mayflower pub was built a long time ago on the banks of the Thames and, I presume, lent its name to the new boat being built in its shadow.
I'm English through and through, but half of my family is American, having travelled to the East Coast from Dorchester in around 1626 with the royal charter to "harvest" all of the North American timber. I feel connected to America and wood!
