There are two factors about teleconverter compatibility.
The Nikon TC compatibility list accounts for some cases of physical incompatibility... i.e. the Nikon brand TC extends too far forward, or the lens extends too far backward, and they can interfere and damage some glass when attached.
Third party teleconverters (like Kenko) possibly might not interfere? (UNKNOWN)
But also,
any 2x TC adds two stop of exposure reduction... i.e., your f/4.5 lens becomes a f/9 lens. The issue is, the metering system cannot meter or focus at f/9, probably it limits out about f/5.6 (camera manual specs should say).
A 1.4x TC adds one stop of exposure reduction, your f/4.5 lens becomes a f/6.3 lens... maybe same problem.
The Nikon list is about the Nikon TC, but it accounts for both factors. Notice it only includes f/2.8 lenses, except for a few f/4 lenses with the note "only for cameras than can focus at f/8 (D800, etc).
It sems good to actually understand the issues.
