Well here is my sad tale :D just took some pictures of a robin and started walking on, then saw this sitting on top of a bush eye level not 15ft away,it was flapping its wings and struggling with some thing, camera up zoom knocked back, frame, focus fire ::what:: nothing happened,by the time the D7000 had finished writing the previous shots this was all i could get.

I don't think the last is an almost -- it's quite a good composition with a nice sense of tension and boding.

This Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher was all over the place. I finally got it in focus and it would take off again.

I've been fairly good at making sure my cameras are set "close" to the way I want them when I set them on my passenger seat for a drive out and about. Today, they were set for what I suspected would be some long exposures of frozen creeks. So, when I saw this Red Tail Hawk snag a rabbit, while sitting at a stop sign, I made a right and grabbed the D600 with the 24-120mm since the D800 with the 16-35mm wasn't going to cut it. I rolled up slowly, but alas it was protecting its kill and took off. I fired, but with ISO 100 and f22 there wasn't much I was going to be able to do with shutter speed, which I'm surprise managed to come up to 1/25sec in the snow.

It coulda been great...

If there's good news, it's that my following skills are improving, because you can almost make out the ex-rabbit.

I saw this little duck but as I pressed the shutter button it turned its back on me

So I went for the black swan which was eating. And the same happened. During pressing the shutter button it turned its back on me too.
