Variable ND filter

Bought one of these (cheaper model) the other day and started to play with it today. All shots were done at f9, 1/160, ISO 100. This first test was to see how linear (or not) the filter is, it is stepped on the adjustable ring from Min (0) to Max (10).

It really darkens quick near the higher end.

Now correct the exposure and see when the X and weird colors start to show up.

Not sure what "X" is but I did turn the lens up to f22 and the exposure up to 30 seconds and got some purple ca in the 9.5 to 10 range.

From what I have been able to see it will be useable for what I want.

I'll put up more shots tomorrow with corrected exposure.

Dial it up enough, and an X will appear in the image.

And it's not purple CA you're seeing... it's just the color cast caused be the extreme darkening. VNDs are rarely truly Neutral.

Keep it 8 or under and you should be fine.

You should also be able to take a photo without the filter, and one with, of a gray card and create a profile for the filter to correct the color cast in post.
