Auto Thread Refresh Issue - losing posts

It seems that I'm having an occasional issue when I view older threads, even those I've never read. When I click on the thread it opens up to the first post, but 5 seconds later, with the first auto-reload, the first several posts under the thread disappear and I cannot go back to #1. I reload the thread and after 5 seconds it refreshes and they're gone again. It happens with Firefox and Chrome browsers, on both PC and Mac. The latest issue is with Marilynne's "Did my D5100 run out of film??" thread. It loads fine, and 5 seconds later, the first post I can read is Rick's #8 in the thread.

Is there any way I can turn the refresh off? I can't find anything in the settings menu for it. It's happened on 5 or 6 threads, but this is the first chance I've had to debug it across platforms and browsers.

That is odd. I just went to that thread and read the first post. Then skipped to the first unread post and read it. Read very slow so it had time to auto refresh at least once if not twice. Then went back to the first post.

I am using Firefox. Sorry, no help from me.

Here's a screenshot from another thread. When I open it, it goes directly to the first unread thread, and then refreshes and sends me to the bottom of the page. I scroll to the top and the first 5 posts are gone (it says Displaying 31-55, and starts with post #36).

Very strange. I tried to duplicate this using chrome and firefox and couldn't. There must be something we're missing.

Whatever it is, it's driving me crazy. If I don't read a thread my first time through then I can never read the first few posts on the current page. For example, I just opened Whitelight's "Photo Critique!" thread started yesterday and after 5 seconds the first post I can see is #8 by Don. Really, really annoying. It's there at first, but not after the five second reload. Would really like to be able to turn that feature off. I can't even hit escape while it's loading and prevent a refresh.

Have you tried clearing caches from both browsers? I'm thinking that you have an outdated file somewhere that is causing the issue.

​Does it happen in chrome incognito mode?

Cache has been cleared, multiple browsers tried, including Chrome in Incognito mode. No differences, happens everywhere on both Mac and PC. Here's the odd thing, if I'm not logged in it doesn't happen, but I'm assuming that has to do with the reload not being enabled when you're not logged in. So, if I'm looking at a page when I'm logged out I can see ads and all posts. If I simply login I can still see everything for 5 seconds and then it immediately eliminates a bunch of posts. I even tried disabling Adblock+ addins and anything else that might be messing with it.

Doesn't matter if I click on the main thread link, the link on the left to go to the first unread post or the one next to the last poster's name to go to the last post, if the thread was there the last time I visited then it'll scroll forward provided that the link puts me on the last/only page for the thread. Posts that are new to me won't do it.

I may have a clue. I have the "Number of Posts To Show Per Page" set at 30 instead of the forum default. When I change that it seems not to happen on some of the threads, perhaps because there aren't that many threads per page. It also does it at 40 with the same thread that does it at 30. Haven't found a thread that does it when it's set to 20, but that doesn't mean it won't. Not sure what the deal is, but I'll keep it at 20 and see what happens. Anything less than that and there's just too many pages to leaf through.
