Thought so, lol. Been a few years since I've been there.

I Just booked a 3 hour trip on this beauty today, it's called car 79 Pullman. Should be pulled by Sir Nigel Gresley, the same type of train in your photo, or The green knight in my earlier photo.

Need to book well in advance as they sell out very early.

I'm a little green with envy! I'm going to look into something like this! The prices aren't bad either :)

Definitely worth doing, the diner car is just icing on the cake (pun intended), only cost me £55 per head for return fare and meal all included.

Sorry for nattering on a photo thread but being on an old carriage and steam train like this, when so few are still running is a real privilege. Great photo opportunity too.
Go on, you know you want to do it :)

No need to apologize on my account!
I was thinking that would make me a very nice birthday present. They do a day photography course too through their website so I will get my wish list out! Thank you for that info and the link :)

I will make amends for derailing the thread by posting a photo - just to get us back on track :p

I'd like to visit Promontory some day too. I recall a memorable portion of a poem about the Golden Spike ceremony that began:

What was it the Engines said,
Pilots touching head to head?
Facing on the single track,
Half a world behind each back.

do you know where they are now?

I think they remain residents of the National Historic Site at Promontory, UT. I'll bet they protect them from the weather somehow, else they'd be reduced to weathered hulks in short order. These are both faithful reproductions; the originals met their fate long ago.

I couldn't keep away from this little fellow. No idea what it was about this train, but I kept going back for another look :)

A couple of shots taken in the late 80's at New Hope, PA. The #40 is the engine for the New Hope - Ivyland R.R. You can still ride this train; takes about 30 mins, IIRC. The other engine(?) is in the boneyard. I think it was awaiting restoration. These are low qual scans of the original prints.

This is Thomas #1 and Percy #6 cruising past the Hagia Sophia at the Morris Arboretum Garden Railway in Philadelphia. The buildings are created entirely of natural materials, such as leaves, bark, vines and twigs. Logs and branches are also used to make tunnels and overhead trestles.

My goodness -- that kinda looks like the cab end of a mighty Reading T1, which is a huge and "modern" (just after WW-II) 4-8-4. I might be wrong, but it sure looks right.

In the early 80's I volunteered on the Black River & Western RR just across the river in NJ when it ran from Lambertville through Ringoes and Flemington to Three Bridges. Here's a low rez scan of the BR&Ws' RS-1 taken in 1983 [Nikon EL-2, Nikkor 50mm, Kodachrome].

Nice work Axeman! Such a treat to see one INSIDE too. I was talking to an engineman-in-training at the Atlanta airport last month as he waited for his flight, and he despises the computer controls in the new generation units. He's a seasoned freight Conductor, so is quite familiar with the time-honored traditional cab layouts with a control stand, but just can't warm to computer screens in a cab.

Did you know that this unit was coming or did fortune just smile on you that day?
