Tower of Power

Hi all - back for another dose of constructive criticism (it really is a great way to learn) - today's snap is an angled shot of the Olympic Tower in Montreal, Canada - the original was shot on a cloudy day & was "ok" but when I Snapseeded it a little, it became a lot more interesting & a little menacing!
Currently trying to concentrate on a couple of areas - sharpness & composition - Thoughts & feedback very welcome

The first thing that jumps out at me is the "haloing" around the tower, and trees. Which for me is a distraction.

I think the composition is interesting, and I like how it looks like the tower is vomiting a bunch of wires :disgust:

Nice Image!

What I like: The subject matter itself, it's dramatic. I like that you shot it in black and white and that the shot has strong contrast, meaning actual BLACKS and WHITES vs. a mass of middle greys which, to my eye, is simply boring. I think the sky is menacing and adds to the overall moodiness.

What I don't like: The subject really doesn't need to be set off at an angle, IMO; or at least not quite so harshly. It has a powerful shape all by itself and the odd angle makes me feel like you're overplaying your hand. The image is strong it its simplicity. I'd like to see a vertical shot. I'm not sure I'd like it better but I'm curious how this would look shot vertically.

Thanks for the feedback - always gratefully received - in the interests of disclosure re Mr Fish's comments, the tower is actually built at an angle (approx 45 degrees) & this is just the top part - of course it doesn't mean I couldn't have taken a shot of it vertically but might have messed the tree line up a bit!

I like the subject. Ir's great how the cable looks like coming out from an open mouth.

I think on the top could a bit more space but not really necessary.

Interesting composition. I like the drama in the sky, shooting upwards. Perhaps, include more of the trees in the composition so that it frames the picture.

Nice photo. I'm another who isn't so taken by the haloning. I saw the same in your Bonsai photo and assume it must be a Snapseed artifact. I've used that on my iPhone but never on DSLR images. It's cool for what it does - fast interesting edits. But I think it falls well short of what you would want for this type of photography. I hate to say it, but it has an Instagram quality to it - and I mean that in the best of all possible ways, for there are a lot of really good photographers on Instagram, but it looks like you could have shot it with a camera phone with this edit. If you could achieve the same tonality without the halo I think it would be a great photo.
