Strap with Bos Tail Modification (Rubber)

There has been a lot of chatter recently on straps, Bosstrap, Cotten, Black Rapid and others... One item of contention was using the tripod socket which I had an aversion too. I went with a Black Rapid and the Bos Tail from BosStrap based on recomends of many here at Nikonites.

My only concern, the metal ring of the tail ... many said no issue... I was still concerned. When I put it all together, the tail and the strap do hit my Grip (not the camera). Not bad.. but I wanted to fix it... so here is what I did..

Original pieces (stock photos)

Bos Tail with its metal ring

This is the adjoining piece (metal) from the Black Rapid

I searched around, played with heat shrink tube to no avail. Finally I found a product at Home Depot (I got it at my local True Value Hardware) Here is what I did.....

Left is all the pieces, right is the Rubber Spray. It was like $8 at True Value

I then masked off the parts and sprayed them. It took several coats, best to keeo it thin coats for best results.
The Caribiner clip and lock on the BR was masked, I sprayed from there, around the loop and back to the main bar.
On the Bos Tail, teh ring rotates within the nylon so I masked off the fabric, sprayed exposed metal, then rotated the ring so that the masked section was visible and sprayed it up to the same level.

This is the assembled product. How long will it last?? I do not know but the rubber is "rubber" and on good. If it does wear, I have plenty more in the can!

Anyhow, thats what I did... if anyone else can use the info, glad that I posted to share.. If not, I was not doing anything right now anyway!!

have a great night and maybe you can use the stuff somewhere else...

After trying several different options I ditched the BosTail and instead put two 1" split-rings on the cameras left-side strap-lug, where the BosTail would go (I used two rings because they come in 2-packs at Home Depot for $1 and one ring just didn't seem like enough). For carrying I clip the Black Rapid RS-7 carabiner through the split rings and I'm off to the races with all the convenience of the Black Rapid sling, an open tripod socket and no "tail" dangling from the strap lug. I love the BR strap, but I didn't like how my camera hung from my hip when suspended from the tripod mount. Using the Black Rapid sling with the split rings makes everything just right.

Take a picture of the setup on the camera when you get a chance please...

Well I got the Boss Tail last week and truly love it. Before I wold only use the tripod once a few weeks. Since putting on the Bos Tail I have used my tripod 5 or six times. I just leave the Tripod in the truck most of the time now. I am not sure who mentioned it first but I think it was you Pat. Best thing since sliced bread.

Sure... Give me two shakes. I'll have to take the shot with... with... well... a Canon.

Okay, these should get the point across. I didn't bother correcting the horrible white balance.

I think I like my Bos Tail better too. No metal hitting the side of the camera. My hand hits the side of the camera and I think the clips and rings there would bother me.

Plastidipping strap rings, now I've seen everything. lol

Now, why would you even want to take the strap completely off? I'm just using the stock one tied quite securely and don't even think about it.

On another note, plastidipping the body into a different color sounds kinda interesting.

I should have mentioned this in my initial post... While it probably does look like the split rings could scratch the camera body, in reality they don't. In a fortunate twist of fate the shape of the strap-lug keeps the rings off the camera body entirely; they can't reach the plastic at all.

Think I will do the same as you with the 1" split rings... Simple and effective....
Well, should you decide it doesn't work for you, you've only spent a dollar for having tried it. I went this route mainly because I need to be able to sling and de-sling my camera as quickly as possible and with an absolute minimum of fuss. The Bos Tail is a great product, the split rings just happen to be faster and that's really my main reason for using them.
